The vertical farm “Space for urban operations 2050” by Daniel Podmirseg is the first vertical farm, developed for a degree thesis.
The farm for London is designed to be able to feed 1% or London’s population by the year 2050. London imports more than 80% of its food from outside of the United Kingdom. This project focuses on the significant potentials with regards to urban development and explores the challenges as to how a three-dimensional public space within the vertical farm can be utilized for the city – from market places to leisure areas to publicly available planting spaces. On the architectural level the building integrates areas for food production and residential as well as office spaces, research facilities and gastronomy. All processes of the food value-added chain have been integrated into the spacial design of the vertical farm.
